This Good Word, Episode 9: Questions (ShowNotes)

IMG_0484 (1)Questions.When they go unasked, they tend to fester, infecting us and those around us. But asking them can feel vulnerable and scary. Can people handle the enormity of our doubts, our uncertainty, our wondering? What place is safe for us to ask those questions that feel so huge?In this episode, my good friend Catie Schlenk (pictured with me above) graciously and vulnerably asks some of those huge questions, and the ensuing conversation we have is expansive and generative. Enjoy!

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart, and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.

- Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet

And we promised a picture of me with the flowing locks. Be kind.

Hotties

Oh, and Catie was right about Jersey!

Books we mentioned:

The Divine Conspiracy by Dallas Willard. Such a great book that answers so many asked and unasked questions. Dallas is the one who answered "Anybody who can stand it!" when asked who he thought would get into heaven.

Unapologetic by Francis Spufford. This book is not for the faint of heart; it tackles lots of the big questions with a unwavering grasp on reality. No BS, cliches, or easy answers given here.

Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton. One of the classics; it has endured for a reason.

The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis. This is a great book that explores the nature of heaven and hell. I think CS Lewis might be branded a heretic today, at least on this issue. Fun!

And finally, don't forget - my Book Release Party is on Friday Night, December 11th.
